I have worked with many clients recently that are not from the US and English is their second language.
They have ONE SKILL GAP in common.
They all score low on EMOTIONAL EXPRESSION. This skill combines effective communication with emotional intelligence.
When we delve into why their scores are low and what is holding them back… it boils down to English being their second language and that they are new to the US.
They are embarrassed to admit that they are unfamiliar with cultural references, words, and phrases.
They have a limited emotional vocabulary.
They are uncertain about socially acceptable ways to express their emotions in the workplace.
This can hold them back from creating strong working relationships. It can appear as though they don’t grasp the significance of a situation or that they are emotionally detached.
As a part of my practice, I help business professionals and leaders with EQ and communication, but the cultural diversity component is not in my wheelhouse.
Can you help? Who are the EQ/communication experts for people who speak English as a second language? I would love to pass your name on.
