I have coached over 30 new clients in the last month. These are professionals & leaders. There is an EPIDEMIC. People are AFRAID to be ASSERTIVE.
They are…
Intimidated by authority.
Worrying about being seen as abrasive.
Too uncomfortable.
Going along with the grain.
Fearing negative consequences.
So what do they do? Nothing..
They know things are getting worse, but they hope they will get better.
They settle for the status quo.
They feel defeated, exhausted, & dissatisfied.
They’re working harder than most because they aren’t able to advocate for themselves to get the resources they need to be successful.
What should they do instead?
Work with a mentor or coach.
Find someone that can be a safe place to talk about things.
Ask for honest feedback.
Create a communication plan…
Treat interpersonal issues the same as any other task that needs to be accomplished.
Set goals for your communication and a deadline.
Hold yourself accountable.
Write down what you want to say.
Practice or roleplay with someone.
Execute…
Be mindful of timing & setting.
Share your truth.
Be respectful.
Give the other person a chance to talk.
Assume good intentions.
Listen with empathy.
Ask for what you need.
Gain agreement.
