One of the most difficult things I have had to learn is when to say no. Saying no doesn’t always feel good. Many of us don’t want to disappoint others. Instead, we often end up saying yes to accommodate someone, rather than honor our gut instinct which is telling us to say no.
When we say yes to the wrong things…
We may over promise and under deliver
We may resent ourselves for saying yes
We may resent the other person for asking
We may become overwhelmed because we take on too much
We are not allowing ourselves to be available to say yes for the right things
Learning to say no is a LIFE SKILL and it requires:
Thoughtfulness and careful consideration
Maturity and confidence
Assertiveness and empathy when communicating
Letting go of the guilt
One thing that may help you feel better when saying no, is to help the other person brainstorm an alternative option.
