Excerpt from my recent keynote: 10 Ways You Can Embrace Vulnerability to Increase Success at Work.
When I tell people that I speak about embracing vulnerability at work, often times I will get push back. “Do you think that is a good idea?” “What if this backfires or they are seen as weak?”
That is a narrow view of what embracing vulnerability can mean.
It doesn’t have to mean that you are oversharing about all of your worries and fears.
Embracing vulnerability requires opening yourself up to risk, uncertainty, and emotional exposure.
Todays topic: negotiating a higher salary; many find this frightening or uncomfortable.
They engage in self-defeating thoughts such as: “I will be viewed as selfish,” or “I am unworthy.”
My advice for embracing vulnerability and leading this type of conversation…
Confront your fears.
Recognize self-defeating thoughts.
Embrace vulnerability.
Reframe those thoughts to more positive ones.
Do market research on salary range.
Find courage.
Practice.
Be confident and go for it!
You may not be able to control the outcome, but at least you won’t kick yourself for failing to advocate on your own behalf and you can be proud that you took a risk.
